As traders take a breather from the recent runup in stocks, the same trends that pushed markets higher on Tuesday remain: the dollar dropped and commodities soared, driving mining stocks higher in overseas markets.

[Update 8:30 a.m.: October housing starts were down 30% from last year, the weakest since April. CPI rose 0.3% in October on higher energy, car prices. At first glance, these figures may affect the mood negatively. 8:35 a.m.: Stock market futures are declining, indicating a lower start.]
Continue reading Before the bell: Futures fall after housing, inflation data

Before the bell: Futures fall after housing, inflation data originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 07:45:00 EST. The NYSE Financial Future Challenge, operated by the NYSE Foundation, By Kids for Kids, K12 Inc. and the United Investors Association, is in full swing, with five finalists just identified. To reach this level, the participants had to develop a new product, idea or process that would "excite, educate and motivate their peers" to become interested in the financial marketplace. The eventual winner lurks within this subset and will receive a $2,500 prize -- a great way to get that portfolio started. And, he or she will be feted at a closing bell ceremony at the NYSE (NYX) on January 11, 2010.

The finalists presented a variety of ideas which are sure to generate some buzz. Kelsey Foss, a 12-year-old from Mountainville, NY, proposed a new television show, "Stock Market Tycoon Idol," which would harness the popularity of reality TV while amping up the content. The program would involve the journeys of 10 kids as they seek to make money or lose it, with the possibility of becoming virtual millionaires along the way. The show would be set at a mock NYSE studio on Wall Street, and exports would be brought out to mentor the contestants. The reality TV reach would help engage a younger audience.

As I write this, shares of the candy company are trading down 4.4% in the afternoon session, on extremely sweet volume (and by sweet, I mean bad).

On an adjusted basis, Hershey increased per-share profit by 14% to 73 cents. Shareholders of the confection company should definitely appreciate the growth reported. Net sales increased almost 6%. On an adjusted basis, earnings per share went up a whopping 48% to 43 cents.

According to Earnings.com, analysts were expecting only 35 cents per share. Hershey's management went the extra distance on this one. Not only was the magnitude of the beat impressive, but as Reuters points out, Hershey raised its guidance for the full fiscal year, something that is obviously a positive signal to the marketplace.

Continue reading Hershey destroys the analysts in Q2

Hershey destroys the analysts in Q2 originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 24 Jul 2009 17:20:00 EST. No, it wasn't a happy promo about its delicious confections. Instead, it was the very familiar issue of the recession. I guess the company's premium chocolates aren't wholly economically defensive in nature after all.

According to the results, sales declined by over 5%. Same-store franchised revenues dropped well over 6%. Earnings per diluted share were cut by 25% to 12 cents. Things are rough for Rocky Mountain.

The National Football League (NFL), however, looking for new revenue streams, is about to take the first step down that slippery slope by selling ad space on team practice jerseys.

This spring the league agreed to allow teams to sell rights to a 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" space (slightly smaller than a paperback book) on their practice jerseys. One can only imagine the sponsors that would like up for such a billboard. The Boeing Company (NYSE: BA) for the New York Jets? The Hershey Company (NYSE: HSY) for the Cleveland Browns? Visa Inc. (NYSE: V) for the San Diego Chargers? And with the aforementioned in mind, The Hershey Company (NYSE: HSY) is worth a review.

In general, analysts see only modest revenue growth for HSY for FY 2009. However, an improved supply chain should reduce costs, and also free-up more capital for strategic growth initiatives at home and abroad.
Continue reading Hershey delivers sweet profits

Hershey delivers sweet profits originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 23 Apr 2009 17:00:00 EST. The big confectioner said it earned $0.38 per share on an adjusted basis. According to this news article, that beat the analysts by three solid pennies.

Not only did the bottom line fare well, but the top line didn't do so badly, either. It increased well over 6%. Okay, that's not a rocketing growth rate, certainly, but all things considered, I think it was a decent performance. Hershey benefited from pricing strategies and the Easter holiday. If you ask me, I think the recent rally in the markets helped to bolster consumer confidence. That may have helped Hershey sell a lot of its candy. Management seemed pretty pleased with volume trends and the response to its marketing initiatives, judging by comments made in the release.

Continue reading Hershey has solid Q1, but is the stock too strong to buy?

Hershey has solid Q1, but is the stock too strong to buy? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 23 Apr 2009 15:00:00 EST. TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer is seeing signs of a coming boom, but he's still being cautious here.

If you had to define the early cycle, if you had to outline what stocks should be soaring coming out of a recession into a boom and which ones should be faltering, you would have to say the action in this market in the last month is the quintessential behavioral pattern.

What are the components of the early cycle? First, it's the homebuilders. As is typical coming out of a recession, the stocks precede the bottom of housing. That's exactly what's happening with the lowest permits and highest affordability and best mortgage rates and massive inventory. Everywhere, except on Wall Street reporting, the bottom is bursting out. When you read the lead story in the Sunday Philadelphia Inquirer, and it is all about the thousands of prospective homebuyers heading south to pick up condos and homes for half of what they were worth two years ago -- or even less -- and you know that virtually no one has broken ground in the Sunshine State in a year, you can bet that the bottom's actually behind us. This housing market has wiped out all but the most stable private builders and even the public ones are merging as we know from Pulte (NYSE: PHM) (Cramer's Take) and Centex (NYSE: CTX) (Cramer's Take). So, in the next cycle, you can see some profitability developing year over year even though the new homes don't have much margin because the foreclosed homes next door are going for a song. And don't believe this won't change the dynamic of future foreclosures. In most areas, rent is higher than the interest on mortgages, so you will find that second or third job needed to stay in your home. The incentive structure's radically different than a year ago.
Continue reading Cramer on BloggingStocks: The seductive pull of the early cycle

Cramer on BloggingStocks: The seductive pull of the early cycle originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 20 Apr 2009 10:30:00 EST.
